I made a lot of progress.
I installed amber11 in my home directory, and Ambertools now compiled correctly and passed all tests.
amber itself also compiled OK, but failed many of the tests.
(see log file).
Most complaints are the tests cannot find the sander program --- but that is strange -- it sits where it needs to be (in amber11/exe, indeed ../../exe relative to the directories of the tests) and is an executable.
