....My experience:
Amber{6,7} compiled "out of the box" after
**reading the INSTALL file and following the instructions there**
Amber8 too, with some (small) trouble due to problems with
the newest intel-compiler.

....I think the advice of most overall use is the ** marked line above.
If you're still having trouble, many people might help you if
you post exactly what you did and what error messages you got as a result.

P.S.:If you use the intel compiler(s) and don't have an rpm-based system,
have a look at
http://support.intel.com/support/performancetools/fortran/linux/sb/CS-007806.htm
this page shows how to install the intel compiler suite wherever you want
(and without having root privileges).
