Yes, this can be a problem. Hence why I say if you can. A number of the
libraries, especially on big machines like SGI Altix's are provided as
shared objects only due to licencing restrictions. This prohibits static
linking. However, statically linked executables are much more convenient and
so people should always try this option first...

Yes, although I think some of the 'bugs' are in the Amber code. Especially
in extra_pts.f. There is something strange about the routines here that
cause problems when they are vectorised. This routine has been re-written in
the development version of Amber9 and the problems with -xW and -xN have
gone away. So, it could be a compiler bug or it could be some type of array
bound / memory error in one of the extra_pts.f routines... "Caveat Emptor".
