If you do 'vi MACHINE' in $AMBEROME/src what happens? Does it open the
machine file that you expect it to? I.e is the link to the machine file you
want working? - the MACHINE-NOT-A-FILE message suggests to me that you have
created a link to a non existant file, or a file to which you do not have
read permission. Thus see if you can open the link successfully in an
editor.
