FORMAT is the way numbers, letters, etc. are interpreted in the Fortran language. See, for example:

Subject: [AMBER] Understanding File Format Specifications

Hello,

This is probably a very simple question, but when I am reading about
file formats on the Amber website, what is the standard that the format
specifiers are using? For example, in the Force Field Parameter File
Specification

https://ambermd.org/FileFormats.php#parm.dat

what does something like

   FORMAT(A2,2X,F10.2x,f10.2)

mean?

A pointer to the relevant definitions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
