Depends on what the “bad news” was.

From experience, there are some different options. Ripping the drives out and mounting them on another system using a “dock” to copy over essential files works. Getting some kind of software like “diskdrill” to restore files and file-systems work (though it is time consuming) and there are a lot more software solutions to recover data for different OSs, free and paid. Just check your favourite search engine

One thing I would recommend without hesitation is “Spinrite” (https://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm) which is excellent in solving many disk issues.
