This is odd, but I wonder if mail formatting is contributing to the confusion.
Specifically: are you losing both the beginning and the end of the filename?
What is the first character of the output filename? (Shows up as a weird
character in my mail reader.)

Can you try a quick test using an absolute path (no "./" at the beginning)?
Or post the shorter filename that works for you? Any chance that there are
non-eight-bit characters in your filenames?
