I suppose you've read the entire conversation. There are several
messages in it, both from myself as well as Dr Case.

The files whose names begin with _ are generated at compile time from
their respective non-underscored versions. Any changes you want to
make, you need to make in the non-underscored versions because...

yup.
I seem to remember that in the end, I was able to compile AMBER 10 for
SGI IRIX, both serial and parallel, with these changes (NB: applied to
the original files, not the ones generated at compile time!)
If you need me to recheck, I can do that, I've still got the necessary kit.
