...You should try the 9.0 compiler. I just did a plain
"./configure -p4 ifort && make" in amber8 and make stopped with an error
only when compiling xleap (which I knew beforehand and which can fixed
easily). Note I used the most corrent 9.0 compiler (the 64 bit one).
Possibly the 8.1 compiler has problems on systems with gcc 4.0 as default
C compiler (as did early versions of the 9.0 compiler).

...such messages are harmless in principle. But gcc4.0.0 is *not*
harmless (=buggy.) You should definitely say e.g. 'sudo yum update' so
that vatious packages, most importantly gcc is updated.
