I think it would be great to more reliably auto-detect environments, but I
wonder if autotools is really simpler or more reliable than coding the
"configure" script directly. Maybe if you could post a simple detection macro
that you are using for autotools, it would give a better idea.
[We can get you access to the amber9 code...contact me privately for that.
But as you can tell, I am not committing us to use autotools ... that will
still require quite a bit of pursuasion.]
