We discovered this when the 1st 64-bit machines came out,
and solved it by using compiler flags that kept it to a
32-bit address space (see the Imakefile).
Presumably variable types would need to be changed to allow
for 64-bit. It wasn't obvious enough at the time for us to
do it for the two 64-bit machines available (Dec/Compaq and
SGI).
