Ok, the story was the 4 min delay on startup.
I have now upgraded the kernel from 4.6.x to 4.7.5 and reinstalled the
driver (370.28). The delay has gone and the simulation runs seem to
fine. I can't really tell what the problem was but maybe it was kernel.
