Hunter,

A virtual machine (VM) is an entire virtual computer residing on the
'host' (meaning the real hardware and the real operating system).

The 'partition' you are referring to, on the other hand, is just a way
to split your hard drive in multiple independent file systems.

While it does not really make sense to compare a partition to a VM, you
are probably happy to hear that for setting up a VM there is no need for
partitioning your hard drive.

This now becomes quite off-topic, so I suggest you search the web for
good resources. I just made a quick search for "windows virtual box
tutorial ubuntu 12.04" and found this article, which could help you a lot:

http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/virtualbox

Note that your requirements might drastically differ from the parameters
chosen in that tutorial. You might want to assign a larger amount of RAM
to the VM and that you also possibly need to either create a large
virtual hard disk or use a windows share via cifs from within the VM.
But all of this really is off-topic here..

Cheers,

JP
