My suggestion: ask what the meaning of those flags are on the gromacs
mailing list.
It could just be a difference in terminology and the 'reference' group is
just the one that is listed first. It's unlikely that many people on
this mailing list are gromacs experts.

FWIW: If I had to guess, I'd say that Gromacs does Umbrella sampling the
same way Amber does.
