I figured it out. The installer, by default, sets ./dat/XaLeap_wcl to be owner readable only (same for ./dat/pixmaps/*). Setting the correct permissions fixed the problem.

Of course, a simple "permission denied" error from the program would have prompted me to check this, but oh well :-)
