Flexibility and Function of Proteins
25. - 27. January 2002
DKFZ Communication Center
Universität Heidelberg
(sponsored by Forschungszentrum Julich and the European Spallation Source)
Invitation
This workshop, planned for about 100 participants, will address the
relationship between protein function and flexibility. Internal protein
dynamics span a wide range of length and timescales. Their characterisation
and understanding their precise relation to function remains a major
challenge for the future. The development of new techniques: in particular
time-resolved crystallography, dynamic neutron scattering and molecular
dynamics simulation, presents us with the opportunity to gain fundamental
insights into the dynamics:function relationship.
Future neutron sources like the European Spallation Source (ESS) which is being
proposed for construction offer major gains in flux both for dynamic neutron
scattering and for the neutron protein crystallographic determination of
hydrogen atom positions. Possible uses of ESS in determining dynamic protein
function will be discussed.
Planned sessions
· dynamics and crystallography
· computer simulation: dynamics and conformational transitions
· dynamic neutron scattering
We are looking forward to seeing you in Heidelberg!

Call for posters
Poster presentations are particularly welcome. Authors wishing to present a
poster are asked to submit a 1-page-abstract by November 15th 2001. The
congress language will be English. The abstract should be submitted in
electronic form as a MS Word, RTF or LaTex document. The abstract should
have 2.5 cm margins and be typed with 1.5 line-spacing in 12 pt Times Roman
or similar font. Please give the title first (bold preferably) followed by
the names and affiliations of the authors. Please underline the name of the
presenting author. If you want to include an image, please attach this as an
extra JPEG, GIF, TIF, EPS or PS file to your e-mail.
The abstracts and the list of participants will be distributed at the
conference. Posters will also be orally presented.
